Waffle Samosas

A whole new version of the ubiquitous samosa, especially for those who wish to avoid the traditional deep-frying method.

As some you may have guessed, this recipe comes straight out of your waffle maker with the typical, home-style “Aloo Ka Masala” a.k.a Potato stuffing! An apparent advantage, apart from cutting back on the calories, is the use of readily available ingredients which seamlessly satisfy palates from kids to grand-parents, not leaving husbands with much of a choice!!

Make it in an assortment of shapes n sizes depending on your waffle maker or by simply pushing your creative skills! A superb snack option OR even a meal for those with Fragile Appetites!

Servings 4 (makes 4 waffles)
Prep time 10 minutes
Cook time 20 minutes

Ingredients for the Waffle Samosa

(1 cup = 200 ml; 1 tbsp = 15 ml)

For the Dough

1½  cups All-purpose flour (Maida)
1 tsp Oil
½ tsp Salt
Water to knead the dough

For the Potato Filling

500 gms Boiled potatoes
1 tbsp Ginger – green chili paste
1 tsp Coriander (Dhania) powder
½ tsp Aniseed (saunf), crushed
1 tsp Coriander seeds, crushed
1 tsp Red chili powder
¼ th tsp Turmeric powder
½ tsp Amchoor (mango) powder
A pinch Of Asafoetida (hing) powder
3 tbsp Oil
Salt to taste

Instructions for the Samosa Dough

1. Make a smooth dough with the ingredients and keep aside for 20 minutes
2. Roll out the dough into thin round chapatis (the size should be that of your waffle machine).

3. Lightly cook them on a hot Tawa for 1 – 2 minutes.  Keep aside covered with a thin muslin cloth.

Instructions for the filling

1. Heat oil in a pan
2. Add the green chili ginger paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears. Add the hing powder and cook for 1 minute.
3. Add the boiled potatoes (crush them with your hands).  Add in all the remaining spices and cook.

4. Once cooked, mash it a little with the help of a potato masher.
5. Now take 2 samosa rotis and fill it with the potato mixture.
6. Preheat the waffle machine. Brush the machine well with oil.  Place the filled samosa roti on it and cook well.
7. Once done, serve hot with green chutney and tomato ketchup.
